Self-employed borrower evidence

Why turnover, taxable profit, drawings, current trading, and tax obligations answer different questions.

General education only

Turnover is not household income

Sales can be strong while wages, drawings, expenses, debt, and tax reduce what is available to support household borrowing.

Keep business and personal money legible

Mixed accounts, unexplained transfers, private loans, and irregular drawings make the evidence harder to follow even when the business is viable.

Explain change rather than hiding it

A new contract, lost customer, equipment purchase, tax arrangement, or one-off expense may need context and supporting records.

Prepare current evidence

Financial statements and returns are historical. Current management information, bank conduct, contracts, and an accountant’s explanation may help show what happened after year-end.

Evidence categories to organise

  • Financial statements and tax returns
  • Current management information
  • Business bank statements
  • Tax position
  • Debt and equipment finance
  • Accountant contact and explanations
